Sounkyo first became famous by the account of Keigetsu Ohmachi's travels"Sounkyo kara taisetsuzan he (From Sounkyo to Taisetsuzan)" which was published in "Chuou Kouron (Central Review Magazine)." Keigetsu- is a great writer in the Taisho period. Sounkyo Spa is now well-known as the leader of Spa-paradise Hokkaido. Sounkyo Spa was discovered by Suijirou Shiotani about 100 years ago and it is pouring into Katsura no Yu in Sounkaku.

Sounkaku Grand Hotel, sharing such history with Sounkyo Spa, has remain as one of the top resort hotels of Hokkaido.Along with our effort to provide good services, it is due to the fact that we hold sources of atural spa of Sounkyo which are great in both quality and quantity. The spa has many good effects that it helps you to ease your body. We have sources of the hot spring and they are providing rich spas in terms of both quality and quantity. The type of the spas are Alkali simple spring. Because the spas are very soft, they are suitable for babies and elders. Anyone is safe to bath in our proud spas.

Articles by Mr. Ohta about Sounkyo, "Reizan Hekisui Kikou-bun," were published serially in a local newspaper, and made Sounkyo popular. Those people who read the articles took a long travel walking on a dangerous path at the bottom of the gorge, hoping to enjoy "Secret Spa" as it was introduced in the articles.

There is a public bath named "Marumo Public Bath" which is built with beautiful marbles. It is equipped with a sauna bath which is good for beautiful skin, so please enjoy them at once. The sauna bath is available from 4:00pm to 11:00 pm.

There is an outdoor, open-to-air bath, "Roten Buro," on the fifth floor. The view of Taisetsuzan National Park is seen from the bath. Mother Nature shows us a dynamic gorge displaying different aspects of the four seasons. Along with the spa, a bath of “Gem Hot-spring” is also equipped.

Guests for bath not staying at the hotel are also welcomed. Please enjoy bathes and have refreshed after your activity, such as climbing mountains, hiking among the colorful autumn leaves, and skiing.
